OCONOMOWOC — Results released from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction last Tuesday showed that Oconomowoc Area School District (OASD) students improved test scores during the spring 2023 Wisconsin Student Assessment System exams.
The spring 2023 assessments included the Forward Exam and Dynamic Learning Maps (DLM) assessment, PreACT Secure and ACT with writing. OASD made its most significant improvements on the Forward Exam, which included English language arts (ELA) scores increasing by 9.6% since 2019 and math scores increasing by 9.7% since 2019. OASD students outperformed the state proficiency rates by 17.6% in ELA and by 24.4% in math.
OASD Superintendent Dr. Mike Sereno said the Oconomowoc area community takes great pride in the achievement of its students and the positive trajectory of their results.
“As a system, we have maintained a focus on ensuring every student engages in rigorous, meaningful, and supportive learning in our schools; we look forward to continued growth in the years to come,” Sereno said in a statement.
While ACT and PreACT Secure scores continued to show a flat trajectory, OASD continued to score higher than the state average. In spring 2023, the junior ACT composite score was 20.6 for OASD versus 19.4 for the state; PreACT Secure composite scores were 18 for OASD ninth graders versus 16.6 for state ninth graders, and 18.8 for OASD tenth graders versus 17.8 for state tenth graders.
Director of Continuous Improvement and Assessment Stephanie Calarco said OASD’s continuing high levels of achievement and annual gains on these exams can be attributed to the district’s committed and hardworking community of staff, students and families. She added that assessment data is used to provide a comprehensive picture of students’ success.
“We examine standardized assessment data in conjunction with the student learning outcomes that result from rigorous instruction and engaging learning experiences,” Calarco said in a statement. “The opportunities that OASD offers students truly speaks to our vision of being an unrivaled learning community.”
The Forward Exam is administered in different content areas based on a student’s age. OASD students in grades 3-8 took Forward Exams in ELA and math; grades 4-8 took an additional Forward Exam in science; and grades 4, 8 and 10 took an additional Forward Exam in social studies. The DLM assessment measures academic progress of students with the most significant cognitive disabilities in the areas of ELA and math for grades 3-11; an additional DLM in science for grade 4 and grades 8-11; and an additional DLM in social studies for grades 4, 8 and 10.
The PreACT Secure is a summative assessment given to ninth and tenth grade students, and is aligned with the ACT and the ACT College and Career Readiness Standards. The Pre-ACT Secure measures what students have learned in the areas of English, reading, math and science.
The ACT with writing includes four multiple-choice tests in reading, math, English and science, along with an essay test that measures student writing skills. The ACT is completed by all Wisconsin high school eleventh graders annually.
