KALAMAZOO, MI — High school juniors take the SAT each spring as part of the Michigan Merit Examination.

The results don’t only help individuals make their case to college admissions committees, but also show a zoomed out picture of how well school districts are preparing their students.

The SAT, or Scholastic Aptitude Test, is a benchmark to test the college readiness of high school students.

The 2024 data is out, showing the average scores in every public high school. Here’s a look at how Kalamazoo-area districts fared.

Top 10 schools, by average SAT score

Kalamazoo-area schools ranged from an average score of 669 (Renaissance High School in Plainwell Community Schools) to 1098 (Portage Central High School in Portage Public Schools).

The highest score an person can receive on the SAT is 1600.

Here are the top 10 Kalamazoo-area schools, by average SAT score in 2024.

  1. Portage Central High School: 1098
  2. Gull Lake Virtual Partnership: 1096
  3. Mattawan High School: 1056
  4. Schoolcraft High School: 1053
  5. Gull Lake High School: 1031
  6. Portage Northern High School: 1030
  7. Vicksburg High School: 1015
  8. Otsego High School: 976
  9. Plainwell High School: 976
  10. Kalamazoo Central High School: 944

Here’s a searchable, sortable table of where Kalamazoo-area high schools ranked. The chart also shows how many students were assessed and what percentage of students were “college ready” in English, math and overall.

Portage Central High School was the only school to eclipse 50% in college readiness, with 50.3% of students being deemed college ready.

Across Michigan, only about 25% of students who took the test in 2024 were deemed college ready.

The data can also be viewed by school district. The map below shows how Kalamazoo-area school districts as a whole performed on the SAT in 2024.

Mattawan Consolidated School had the highest district average at 1056. Portage Public Schools was second, with an average of 1055, followed by Schoolcraft Community Schools at 1053.
