It was Brad Dudley’s turn to present his schools CIP (Continuous Improvement Plan) to the Scottsboro Board of Education last week. Dudley is the principal at Scottsboro High School. He presented goals and achievements, praised his students and staff, and gave some statistics in several areas.
The goals for 2023 are in the areas of academic growth and achievement; college, career, and workforce ready; safe and supportive learning environments; and service oriented, team driven staff.
“We will do all we can to raise proficiency,” said Dudley. Using innovative teaching and ongoing tiered student support, the goal is for 65% of SHS students to demonstrate proficiency on the 2023-2024 standardized and/or benchmark assessments in Reading (ELA) and Mathematics. They are offering math and English courses year round for freshmen and sophomores. The Class of 2025 will be offered the ACT in October and March. In order to achieve this goal, students will work on reading comprehension and writing in all subject areas, increase collaboration between teachers and content subjects, and use the W.I.N period to provide interventions to all students in grades 9-12.
In the college, career, and workforce ready area, SHS will increase the amount of real-world learning opportunities with activities fostered by partnerships with business and industry or other improvement initiatives. Currently, 131 of the 159 seniors have earned their College and Career Readiness Indicator and 22% of the high school students are enrolled in a college level course through dual enrollment. The partnership with Redstone Federal Credit Union has students learning financial responsibility.
“YouScience assessed every student in their history class,” said Dudley. This helps create a plan for the students. All 10th graders are given Workkeys which helps with purposeful placement of students to facilitate their success.
During the first semester, there are 161 students taking 281 dual enrollment classes. Dudley said that SHS now has the largest percentage of students enrolled in dual enrollment through Northeast Alabama Community College. “There is now a dual enrollment class in every core subject,” stated Dudley. “We are very proud of this, but there is still room to grow.”
It is important to have a safe and supportive learning environment at all schools. One goal is to reduce the number of discipline incidents by 10% when compared to the last school year. Another goal is to increase overall student, faculty, and staff attendance. Dudley has brought back the exam exemption policy which has already increased attendance. The faculty is involved in Safe and Civil Schools training.
The last goal involves having a service oriented and team driven staff. The faculty and staff at SHS is committed to create and nurture a culture of high expectations that inspires individual excellence. You can find information on both the system and school web pages. The staff participates collectively in at least one community service project per semester. Homecoming is a big event at SHS, and they worked hard this year to involve the community in more of the activities. They strive for open communications with all stakeholders.
First day enrollment this year at SHS was 720. This is a decrease over the past couple of years when there were 739 on the first day in 2022, and 747 the first day in 2021. The sophomore class is the largest followed by freshmen then juniors with the senior class being the smallest.
