An international mathematics and science assessment showed that fourth-grade students achieve higher math scores when they attend more affluent schools, feel a strong sense of belonging at school, have higher socioeconomic status, and receive “high clarity” math instruction.
The Trend in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) was conducted on fourth and eighth graders in 64 countries. Since 1995 the study has been conducted every four years.
The 2023 study, which is conducted through the TIMSS & PIRLS International Study Center at the Boston College Lynch School of Education and Human Development, assessed home, school, and classroom environments. Environmental awareness and student experiences and attitudes were also assessed.
Eighth-grade students who have a “high” sense of school belonging have higher achievement in math and science than those who have no or little belonging, the research found. Eighth graders in more affluent schools also have higher math and science scores.
