The Math Editorial Team is a collaborative group with a strong team culture; we value and encourage input from all team members. Editors assist in all phases of both print and digital product development with primary emphasis on writing and editing manuscripts and/or ancillaries for both print and digital components. With supervision, Editors work closely with Design, Production, Digital Production, and other departments from manuscript stage to final product and may oversee work of freelancers and/or development houses.
SCOPE AND IMPACT OF JOB
The Editor knows the subject matter for his/her assigned area and uses that knowledge to develop competitive offerings. The Editor is knowledgeable about all of the “details” in the plan for the assigned project, including specs, writing guidelines, and the plan details for RFPs (if appropriate). The Editor relies on guidance from his/her direct supervisor to ensure that the evolving product meets the objectives of the plan, its budget, and its schedule. Manages smaller projects and vendors to complete assigned projects.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Contributes creative ideas during project planning.
Write and edit manuscripts or review manuscripts of vendors for quality and standards alignment.
Ensure compliance with state standards and assessments.
Monitor appropriateness of text material as to reading level, content accuracy and currency, freedom of bias, and cultural responsiveness.
Write and provide specs for art and photo-researchers.
Participate in evaluation of sketches and selection of photos.
Working with Product Management and Marketing, analyze competition and market trends and incorporate findings into program.
Oversee work of outside developers.
Participate, as appropriate, in market research efforts (e.g. prepare sample lessons, attend focus groups, etc.)
Participate in planning assigned projects; make creative suggestions that reflect an understanding of the market and an awareness of customer needs.
Ensure that product responds to customer needs.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
Related work experience
2-3 years experience in curriculum development or the development of instructional materials.
K-5 teaching experience in the assigned subject area is preferred.
Must be knowledgeable regarding educational methodologies and instructional design.
Relevant editorial experience.
Formal education or equivalent
BA in related field is required
Skills
Familiarity with today’s youth, popular culture, and what motivates youth to learn.
Proficient user of software programs including MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Understands the production process for print and digital instructional materials.
Demonstrates ability to write original content, and to edit and rewrite content generated by others, to meet standards of accuracy, style, grade level, and market need.
Able to create and deliver content in a format suitable for digital products.
Promotes sense of teamwork and works to reduce team barriers and conflicts.
Able to respond quickly in an environment of changing priorities. Must be able to set relevant priorities on a daily basis and meet deadlines.
Commands work habits that are highly productive, working efficiently to develop quality content.
Must be strategic and efficient in planning and executing to ensure consistent on-time delivery of product.
Must be able to utilize constructive feedback to refine skills and reduce mistakes.
Must display a “customer focus” in working with teams to conceptualize marketable product.
Knows how to translate knowledge of content and teaching into formats that meet customer needs.
Proactive in anticipating, evaluating, and solving for issues to avoid disruptions in workflow.
Displays self-confidence in actively participating in meetings and open forums.
