The performance of Bury schools in this year’s GCSE examinations has been published in the annual secondary school key stage four tables.

The data, which is subject to change, shows how well each high school in Bury performed in the Year 11 exams.

The table shows the percentage of pupils achieving 9-4 grades in English and maths, together with stronger results of 9-5, in English and maths.

The percentage of pupils achieving the “gold standard” benchmark of five or more good GCSEs including English and maths has also been published.

Prestwich academy school, St Monica’s RC High School, came top of the league with 73 per cent of pupils leaving with five or more passes to reach the benchmark, which sits above the national and local average.

Darul Uloom Al Arabiya Al Islamiyya, better known as Darul Uloom Bury, is an independent school in Holcombe and came in second place with 70.2 per cent.

The Progress 8 score grades schools and local authorities on the improvement a pupil makes in the time between leaving primary school to leaving secondary school.

The Derby High School on Radcliffe Road in Bury topped the board with an “above average” progress score of 0.35 which included 170 pupils in the measure.

St Monica’s came in second with a score of 0.21 and Parrenthorn High School in Prestwich came in third with 0.2.

It means that pupils at all three schools achieved up to half a grade higher in each qualification on average, compared to similar pupils across the country.

Mrs C.H. Hubert, headteacher at The Derby, said: “We’re delighted with our high Progress Score placing us at the top of the Bury league tables and also one of the highest performing schools in Greater Manchester.

“At The Derby staff, parents and students recognise the importance of success at GCSE level and work exceptionally hard to fulfil their potential. We are a great team and we are incredibly proud of these results”.

The Attainment 8 score is a measure published annually showing the average academic performance of a secondary school. It is calculated by adding together pupils’ highest scores across eight government-approved school subjects, which include English, maths and sciences.

St Monica’s also came top with an Attainment 8 score of 51.1 per cent, with Woodhey High School in Ramsbottom and Parrenthorn High School both following closely behind with scores of 49.1 per cent each.
