Students may now write up to only six subjects of their choice instead of a maximum of up to 10 from the three sections of the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) next year, The Indian Express has learnt.
Sources at the University Grants Commission said, “Below 30,000 students in this year’s CUET has chosen more than 3-4 subjects (multiple papers) to attempt in the test…This is decision is still underway and no formal conclusion has been made yet”
Earlier students could take up to 10 subjects from section 1 (Language-13 Indian Languages +19 foreign languages), section 2 (27 domain subjects) and section 3 (general test), out of which now, students may now choose to write up to six subjects from the above choices.
This would also allow for the scheduling of examinations in a shorter window, and an early declaration of results next year, before June 2024, sources further added.
This year, the exams were held from May 21 to June 23, though it was originally meant to end on May 31, due to the high number of registrations.
The debut edition of CUET — the first-ever national entrance examination for admissions to undergraduate and postgraduate courses in 45 central universities held in 2022 — was marred by technical problems leading to cancellation of the test on several days.
The test this year was relatively glitch-free. However, there was a brief controversy when the National Testing Agency (NTA) released the answer key on June 29 when teachers and students noticed discrepancies

For instance, the correct answer for a question on the country leaving the European Union was marked as USA. The NTA then released a revised answer key on July 12. A total of 411 questions were dropped from the answer key.
This year, there was also an unprecedented delay in the announcement of the results due to the examination dates being postponed in Manipur, due to the violence in the state, and in Jammu and Kashmir, to look for ways to make sure the applicants did not have to travel outside the Union Territory to give the examination.
This year, 5.1 lakh female candidates wrote the CUET, the single gateway test for admission to undergraduate programmes, compared to 6.02 lakh men. Last year, 114 candidates, out of 9.9 lakh who registered for the test, topped at least four subjects.
